Show Notes

Summary

If you asked a group of people to describe themselves in one word, the chances that confidence would be said is about zero.  Self-confidence is such a rare trait in people that we think there is a secret to unlocking it.  The problem is not the lack of confidence, but all of the lies surrounding how to get it, who it’s available for, and its permanence.

In this episode, we dispel the contradictions society is feeding us about where confidence comes from.  Most sources that are told to us are temporary.  Another problem is that they seem to be dependent on your circumstances.  Confidence should be available to everyone, regardless of where they live, how much money they have, and who their parents are.

I throw a personal story in this episode because most people quickly misjudge me about where my confidence comes from.  As always, I finish off by giving you some profound truths to anchor yourself in.

1. False Sources of Confidence

How often have you said, “If only I had money, looks, were smarter, had different parents, life would be so easy?  Society is giving us a contradictory narrative, telling people “You can be your source of confidence,”  even though what we clearly see promoted is that people who have “select traits” seem to get ahead.

Another bag of horrible advice given to the general public is ‘fake it till you make it’ and adopt an alter ego.  Both of these are clearly anti-confidence, but you’ll find them on any major self-help guru’s page.
Of course, last but surely not least is getting drunk!  Ahh, ‘liquid courage’.  All the bad decisions we’ve made, believing we were the most confident version of ourselves. *sigh*

2. The Need for Certainty and Control

The definition of confidence

  • the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust.
  • the state of feeling certain about the truth of something.

Many of the “opinion leaders” of today would tell you there is nothing you can be certain about.  Strange that the definition of confidence says otherwise!  Despite this glaring contradiction, when we think about the state of the world, the increasing wars, and declining economics, we look for something to give us hope.  Something to anchor ourselves to.

It should come as no surprise, then, that one of the tools we’ve been given is a scientific tool called anchoring to help us out. It’s an NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) technique that can help you achieve confidence.

Those who think science doesn’t hold all of the answers have turned to astrology and tarot cards, with no desire for truth, just an uplifting, false hope.

3. Jesus as an Anchor

If we put our confidence in changeable things, then it’s possible our confidence could fail us when we need it the most.  The only failsafe is to trust something (someone), constant.

Everything fails, dies, or comes to an end.  Everything except Jesus Christ.  He has always been and is the same past, present, and future. (Hebrews 13:8)  Only someone who can make that claim is powerful enough for you to put complete faith in. Those who trust in His promises have the capability of achieving unbelievably great things.

Give it a try 💪🏽🤍
