Practical Christianity: Rediscovering Character in our Lives

By Nefreteri – Lost Virtues Series, Intro Post

Let’s be real: one of the greatest challenges today—especially for Christians—is finding good people to date. Everyone’s talking about it. The world is screaming that “all the good ones are taken,” and unfortunately, many Christians are echoing the same frustration.

But here’s the thing: that shouldn’t be our problem. Not really. And I think I know why we’ve found ourselves here.

If you don’t know me, I’m Nefreteri, and this is the Introduction to a new series where I teach practical Christianity through character training—yes, actual character development, rooted in Scripture and spiritual truth. James 1:22 says ‘But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. ‘ It’s not enough to say we’re Christians, we’ve gotta put in the work!

Why “Good” Isn’t Good Enough

We’ve all heard the verse: “Do not be unequally yoked.” So what do Christians do? We go out looking for other believers. Ya know, the Proverbs 31 woman, the Ephesians 5 man. But if you’ve tried this, you know—it’s still hit or miss. Why? Because “Christian” is now just a label. We don’t actually know what we’re supposed to be looking for beyond that.

So let’s fix that.

This isn’t a dating series (don’t worry, no cringe Christian mingle advice here), but we are going to talk about the real issue: the “good people” myth.

People are out here searching for “good Christians” without understanding that what they’re truly looking for is something called character.

The Lost Language of Character

Character is a word that’s pretty much disappeared from modern vocabulary. It’s fallen out of fashion—but everything old becomes new again, right? So I’m bringing it back. Not only that, I want to show you how to recognize good character in others and cultivate it in yourself.

I grew up in a Christian home with a strong mother who raised us on virtues—not just “values.” That word—virtues—was a big part of my upbringing. We had The Book of Virtues by William Bennett, and we were raised to understand the difference between what the world considers good behavior and godly character.

But over time, society swapped virtues for values, and now people say things like, “We share the same values,” without realizing that two people can “value family” and still treat their families totally differently. Why? Because values are subjective. But virtues? They have definitions.

Virtues vs. Vices vs. Vibes

We don’t talk about vices anymore either, but they’re everywhere—selfishness, greed, envy, pride, gluttony. Society has rebranded them as survival tools: “Be selfish to protect yourself,” “Greed drives success,” “Jealousy just means you’re inspired.” Lies. All of it.

We’re taught to prioritize personality, values, and mental health—which are important—but not at the expense of the soul. If you believe you have a soul created by God, then there are deeper truths science can’t explain. That’s where character lives.

I’m not talking about Stoic virtues or man-made philosophies. I’m talking about godly virtues, the ones that reflect God’s own character. These are spiritual disciplines that are meant to form us from the inside out.

This ALSO isn’t about positive people. Ya know, the “good vibes only” or “good energy”. We’re searching for truth and substance, not how we feel!

This Series: Lost Virtues

This new series is called Lost Virtues. Each week, I’ll teach you one virtue, the vices that oppose it (on both sides), and what it looks like in action. Yes—both sides. Because this isn’t just about one good trait versus one bad one.

Jesus tells us to walk the narrow path, and in Joshua, God commands His people not to turn to the left or the right. That’s because real virtue lives in the middle. It’s easy to fall into either deficiency or excess—and both are forms of sin.

So no, being “too humble” isn’t just being extra modest. It might be false humility. Too generous? That could become codependency. There’s a balance to this walk, and only the Holy Spirit can help us maintain it.

Examples of Extremes

Let me prove how hard it is to stay balanced. Let’s take three areas of society:

  1. Athletics – Balance beams require training. Fall too far left or right? You’re off. But put a hundred-foot drop under you? Suddenly, you’ll fight to stay in the center. Why don’t we treat our spiritual lives with that kind of urgency?
  2. Culture – We’re a bipartisan nation that swings wildly between extremes. Feminism is a great example: from oppression to hyper-independence to now, a rejection of relationships altogether. Where’s the middle? Why can’t men and women get along?
  3. The Church – I grew up at the tail end of legalism: rule-heavy, fear-driven Christianity. Now, many churches have gone the opposite direction—accepting everything and correcting nothing (leniency, say what?). We’ve replaced sanctification with comfort. Neither side reflects Christ.

I’m not here to bash anyone. I’m here to teach you how to walk in the freedom of true Christian virtue—not legalism, not lawlessness.

‘But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.’ – Hebrews 5:14 Christian discernment is WAYYY more difficult than many think.  You gotta know the TRUTH and your enemy if you want to know how you’re being tricked. Therapy-speak has no place in the our Biblical language. The Bible isn’t a mental health book, it’s the Word of God.  #bibleverse #devil #spiritualwarfare #therapy #christian #jesus #callinthemout #trigger #newage

The Holy Spirit doesn’t “trigger” He convicts

This Is Sanctification, Not Judgement

I’m not your pastor. I’m your sister in Christ and your teacher in this journey. I’m still growing too. Every virtue I’ve studied has convicted me just as much as it will challenge you. But that’s a good thing. That’s how God shapes us.

When you see a topic that makes you uncomfortable, watch it anyway. That’s not a trigger—that’s the Holy Spirit trying to work something out in you. (TikTok video on it here.)

Let’s grow together. Not with rules, but with wisdom. Not with judgment, but with discernment. And definitely not with vibes, but with virtues.

What to Expect

  • A new episode every week
  • One virtue at a time
  • The vices that oppose it (yes, plural)
  • A biblical foundation for each teaching
  • Practical application for your real life

So share this with your Christian friends. Watch it with your Bible open. Pray about what you hear. And don’t leave your church—this isn’t a replacement. This is an add-on to deepen what God’s already doing in your life.

We’re not just becoming “better people.” We’re becoming transformed Christians.

Let’s recover what’s been lost.

Stay Salty Christians 😉,
Nefreteri
